Water Biofiltration

Project Summary

Batipa Field Station (BFS) is located in the Chiriqui Province of Panama, and is always looking to become more sustainable. Through WPI, they sponsored my groups project on biofiltration. We researched, designed, and implemented a greywater biofiltration system for them. We also created educational material so that BFS can spread information about biofiltration.

Design

I prepared for the trip to Panama by conducting archival research on the topic of biofiltration. I corroborated sources on the effectiveness of a variety of materials. As a group, we contacted experts and interviewed them. Upon arrival, we met with our sponsor to better understand the needs of BFS specifically. Based on these 3 methodologies, we created a final design. I turned it into a 3D model that we could follow as we implemented it at BFS.

Educational Model

One of our goals was to ensure that anybody could build or replicate our design. In order to do so, we took an empty bottle, and filled it with the materials used inside of our bucket filter. Our sponsor is now able to show people our design, and the materials inside our design without opening it up. Additionally, we created a poster and research paper for our project.
